9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Charlie Kaufman wrote one of the best screenplays that has ever been made into a film here and Michel Gondry perfectly succeeded in bringing Kaufman's story to the screen. The story is completely original and there has never been another movie in existence that mixes two completely opposite genres as well as this one. Eternal Sunshine is basically a hard science fiction film disguised as a romantic drama and it brings both genres to new heights. Jim Carrey's Joel and Kate Winslet's Clementine are two very flawed lovers who present many parallels to the light and dark sides of being in a relationship. Kaufman uses the science fiction element of having Clementine erase Joel from her memory in order to fully explore the nature of relationships and memories. While Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind does have one of the most interesting plots of any movie of the new millennium the ending is usually incredibly overlooked. The idea that Joel and Clementine know the fate of their relationship but want to give it another try is beautiful and haunting at the same time, which keeps it form leaving your mind.
