6. Lost in Translation (2003)
Sofia Coppola's romantic comedy about two people who are lost within themselves and searching for something new to excite them is one of the most sublime and beautifully photographed films to come along in a very long time. The way Japan is represented gives the viewer a real sense of place but also an awe for a land that is so different from their own. Through the almost dreamlike depiction of the city the viewer is able to understand the film's major themes of being lost and adrift in life. This is key to the film because it helps an audience connect with Bob and Charlotte in order to really understand their loneliness. They are shown in this huge, amazing city yet they have no means of properly communicating, which only serves to heighten the sympathetic aspect of the characters. Once they finally connect with each other Lost in Translation becomes a film that is about two people gaining solace in one another instead of being about two people who are lost in the world. This makes the movie a very poignantly real portrait of love that is one of the simplest and most alluring love stories of all time.
