Film noir is a genre that used to be incredibly prevalent with films like The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep and Citizen Kane being amongst not only the best movies that the genre has to offer but also some of the best movies in general. Chinatown still remains the best film noir, Blade Runner completely reinvented the genre in the 80s and then LA Confidential gave the 90s that decade's defining film noir. There was really no where else to go but straight down the middle with the genre until Shane Black's Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang debuted only a few years ago. Black's film was able to expertly mix the intriguing mystery that is at the heart of any great detective story but also add a self aware tone of comedy that reinvented the genre for a new era. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang perfectly marries the more shady characters of the classic era film noirs of days gone by, while using a Raymond Chandler inspired story to add an extra layer of homage without becoming a ripoff. All of this combined created a fiercely original story but also one that holds up to what preceded it and ups the ante.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
