5. Goon (2011)
Movies featuring Sean William Scott as the leading character, generally speaking, rarely end up being any good. That's not a criticism of the actor himself, who I find to be occasionally intolerable, but otherwise likeable in pretty much everything he does - it's just the way it goes. Upon hearing that Scott was to headline a comedy movie about ice hockey didn't do much to excite me, then, a reaction that seemed to be shared by pretty much everyone else who existed in the world at that point in time. Once again, though,
Goon is solid proof that pre-judging is one of the worse things you can do as a movie lover, even if your instincts tell you otherwise. So whereas on paper this flick looked like it was headed straight for the bargain bin at your local supermarket, it revealed itself to be a surprise gem: funny, entertaining, gloriously violent and surprising sweet, I'm pretty sure this also contains the best performance of Sean William Scott's career. As Doug, a bouncer with a strange tolerance for pain who finds himself playing in the hockey big leagues, Scott crafts his most likeable character sinceĀ well, ever. This is a genuinely great comedy film: don't miss it.
