11 Movies That Were Far Better Than They Had Any Right To Be

4. God Bless America (2012)

God Bless AmericaWhy It Had No Right To Be Any Good: Incredibly Controversial Premise A movie whose premise hinges on the idea of a grown man and a young girl teaming up to live out what filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait poses as one of the great American fantasies (going around and pretty much killing all those people we are ruining humanity in general) was bound to draw up controversy, and although God Bless American did have its detractors, most movie-goers found it to be primal wish fulfilment done right. That's to say, this story about a man who finds he's terminally ill and sets out to murder all those folks who consistently ruin your day (cinema talkers, those teenagers featured on shows like My Sweet Sixteen) could have sunk like a stone, but Goldthwait finds the perfect tone as to both offend and enlighten us. Sure, it's no masterpiece, but considering how easily this might have turned out just plain awful, it's a surprising solid feat.
