11 Perfect Times Actors Went Incredibly Dark
7. Topher Grace - Predators
Topher Grace already had some precedent with playing dark characters off the back of his move from TV's That 70s Show into movies thanks to the plum role of Eddie Brock in Spider-Man 3. Unfortunately, because that character was a bolt-on and in no way properly conceived, he was also pretty mediocre. There have been worse performances, but few have been so closely tied to why an entire fanbase felt let down.
But when he turned up in the massively underrated Predators three years later having laid pretty low in the meantime (other than an appearance in the risible Valentine's Day), he was still something of an unknown quantity. It was almost like Spider-Man 3 had wiped his slate clean.
He plays unexpected criminal Edwin as an everyday dweeb, wrongly incarcerated with monsters, until the end sees him revealed to be a worse predator than the titular aliens. The switch into a cold, callous psychopath is incredibly successful and it's everything you wish he could have brought to Venom.
