Cinderella Man was a biographical sports drama starring Russel Crowe as the world heavyweight boxing champion James J. Braddock. Braddock, whose nickname was Cinderella Man, was mostly known for his role in what was called the "The greatest fistic upset since the defeat of John L." His opponent? Max Baer.

Max Baer was known for knocking out and later killing the boxer Frankie Campbell during a bout between the pair in San Fransisco. The incident shook Baer to the point where he lost a number of matches after the event.

Not that long after, Baer was also indirectly involved in the death of another boxer. Both experiences ended up giving Baer the nickname "the killer in the ring," something that he disliked enormously.

This kind of reputation sadly stayed with him to the point where false accounts of his behavior were depicted in the media. Baer's portrayal in Cinderella Man was no different and the character was written as a dishonorable man who openly bragged about how many men he had killed in the ring.

In reality, Baer had been scarred by both incidents, in particular the Frankie Campell episode. It was later revealed that he had even raised money for the deceased boxer's wife and family and lived with the guilt for the rest of his life.

The family of Baer was not happy and also accused the movie's producers and writers of using Baer's Jewish ethnicity as a negative aspect of his personality.
