11 Sci-Fi Movies That Got Science Completely Wrong
10. Prometheus - “Half-Billion Miles”
Half a billion miles from Earth would take the crew of the Prometheus to somewhere near Jupiter, and we're supposed to believe that these people are real astronauts?
Fans of Ridley Scott's Alien franchise had spent a long time waiting for the fifth instalment, although when Prometheus came along it didn't quite live up to its hype.
Among a number of other issues, Prometheus, despite being a part of one of the most highly celebrated sci-fi franchises of all time, was riddled with small plot holes and errors in the science department.
Disregarding the fact that the apparently highly intelligent team spend most of the movie doing remarkably stupid things, there's one particular moment that's impossible to ignore for its sheer inaccuracy.
In a line of throwaway dialogue, Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) mentions that she's travelled "a half-billion miles from Earth". Seems adequate to explain how far from home the team is, right?
Not at all. Half a billion miles would only place them somewhere around Jupiter, which is something that Vickers, a senior employee of the company funding the mission, should have known.
It might seem nit-picky, but once you know how wildly inaccurate the dialogue is, you can't watch the scene in the same way again.
