11 Songs That Were Far Better Than The Movies They Were Made For
4. Electric Dreams - Electric Dreams
The classic 1984 hit was a staple of many music collections for children of the 80s, an instantly boppy song with belting, yet sincere lyrics backed up by the use of synthesisers and electric guitars that was iconic to the era. Italian singer-songwriter Giorgio Moroder composed the song, but it was initially deemed too corny, before Phil Oakey came on board with new lyrics and his trademark vocals to great success.
Electric Dreams the film was quite mediocre, a lightweight treading of insecurities related to artificial intelligence prevalent in that context. The film follows a love triangle between a man, his neighbour and a home computer that has become sentient, named Edgar.
No, I’m not joking, that’s actually the plot.
The film is even worse on retrospective viewing with the film’s special effects ageing dreadfully, with basic screen savers serving as the sole visual device to display Edgar’s emotions. On top of this, the romance elements are bereft of chemistry and attempts at humour are breathtakingly corny.
The worst scene of the film comes in the car crash of a climax, with the title track somehow playing on radio stations throughout the world as everyone randomly dances to the tune. It’s a woefully miscalculated conclusion to this box office bomb that was an unnecessary tarnishing of a perfectly good song.
