It's hard not to always go back to the most fertile sounding casting rumour, even if Depp's star has been somewhat on the wane since the rumours first appeared that he might be up for Strange. It's true that more recent career moves might not have exactly panned out as Depp might have liked, and his decision making has long been under scrutiny since he started working too much with Tim Burton, but at his best he still fits the bill. Kevin Feige might have rubbished the latest rumours that Depp has already met with Disney to talk the role over, but until someone else is cast, the idea of the actor pulling on Strange's cloak and exploring the limits of the magical universe will endure. There might be some concerns over him phoning a performance in, but that would be the responsibility of his director, and any tendency to be too comic could well inform the characterisation in a similar way that Thor's universe has some inherent comedy. There is no avoiding the fact that Depp's face, and his theatricality combine to make him the most enduring option for the role, and though he is probably also the most obvious, and the most expensive, Marvel could be looking at a Robert Downey Jnr style success story with him.
