11 Things You Learn Rewatching Dr. No
5. It's Hilarious... Sometimes Unintentionally
While far away from the quip-happy nature of the Moore-era Bond films, Dr. No is nevertheless surprisingly funny and far from the dry debut some younger viewers might dismiss it as.
For example, after running a pursuing car off the road, Bond callously quips, "I think they were on their way to a funeral", and when Honey asks if he's looking for shells, he replies, "No, I'm just looking", while continuing to ogle her stunning bod.
These lines walk the line between being goofy and witty enough where they still work without activating the cringe gland, and are sparingly employed so as to avoid upending the fairly grounded, serious tone.
Elsewhere, though, there are some comedic moments that occur accidentally, namely an assailant biting down on a cyanide capsule and hammily telling Bond, "To hell with you!", to the aforementioned car spontaneously exploding into a fireball as it starts careening down the cliffside, and Professor Dent's (Anthony Dawson) awkward hand spasm when Bond shoots him dead.
Anyone who thinks the movie is stodgy and dull needs to take a second look, because there's plenty to laugh at here, albeit regardless of the intent.
