11 Things You Learn Rewatching Dr. No

4. The Tarantula Scene Remains Completely Terrifying

Though the conceit behind it is almost comically obvious, the scene in which Dent places a presumably venomous tarantula inside Bond's room remains a skin-crawlingly terrifying scene to anyone out there with even the mildest case of arachnophobia.

The Blu-ray release makes it even more blindingly obvious that a glass sheet has been placed between Sean Connery and the spider - in the above image, you can even see the shadow the spider casts against Connery's shoulder - and there are blatant inserts performed by another actor.

However, the tension of that sequence, primarily the size of the spider, director Terence Young's uneasy, slow-burn approach to the scene and Connery's sweat-soaked reaction, ensure it's a mini-masterpiece of cinematic suspense.

Sure, it's pure silliness by today's standards that a Bond villain would try to kill the spy by such theatrical means, but it sure is viscerally effective all the same.
