The Role: The Clown Prince of Crime himself, Batman's most fierce adversary, The Joker. Why He Might Win: Heath Ledger won a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight, and though it's likely that Ledger would not have won had he lived (sad to admit though that is), his win did open the door for more unconventional performances to win the award. Leto has won it before for Dallas Buyers Club, so the Academy knows that he has the talent, and that'll work massively in his favour. Plus, from what we've seen so far, Leto is going full-in for a mental and totally different Joker from what we've seen before. Why It's Unexpected: Do you need a list? It's a comic book movie, the character has already won an Oscar before, Leto only won an Oscar two years ago so the Academy might not feel he is "due", and it's quite likely that his role in the movie will be pretty small. It would be a major shock, but dependent on the quality of the film, not at all impossible.
