If you've never seen Dog Soldiers and are interested in a brief synopsis, imagine watching Night of the Living Dead meets 300. That's essentially what the film is all about, but instead of relying on zombies as the main villain, the threat stems from a family of werewolves.

The movie is set in the Scottish Highlands and features a squad of soldiers who fight and make a stand against some of the best representations of werewolves in film. The movie relied on practical effects, using full-body werewolf costumes that would frighten the dead.

The use of practical effects coupled with the constant fear of death at the monsters' hands results in an intense action movie steeped in classic horror elements. The soldiers are picked off, one by one, in increasingly grisly and gory ways, leaving the audience to wonder who, if anyone, will survive.

Dog Soldiers broke the rules of depicting werewolves in film by making them far more humanoid than normal. The beast is certainly there, with all of its intensity and love of violence. Still, the monsters are far more imposing and frightening than has been featured in any film that came before it.
