12 Actors Joss Whedon Always Casts In His Work

3. Nathan Fillion

He might have played TV's Castle for eight seasons and counting, but Nathan Fillion's most beloved role has still got to be Mal Reynolds, the roguish captain of the Serenity in Firefly and its associated movie €“ even though he only played that role for a fraction of Castle€™s screentime.

As if to apologise for Fillion not getting to play Mal for as long as he should have, Whedon has cast the actor in numerous roles since. Firstly, he got him to play evil preacher Caleb in the final few episodes of Buffy, then he turned up in Dr Horrible as the titular supervillain's rival Captain Hammer before playing Dogberry in Much Ado.

If you're wondering what the deal is with that film, by the way, Whedon shot it while on a two week vacation from filming The Avengers. Instead of, you know, relaxing, he got hold of a number of people he had worked with before (including The Avengers' Clark Gregg) and filmed the adaptation at his own house.
