9. Joaquin Phoenix (Mary Magdalene)

Joaquin Phoenix is one of those actors who seems like he can never give a bad performance, and that seemed true until earlier this year, when he starred as Jesus Christ in Garth Davis' unbearably dull Mary Magdalene.

Phoenix generally has a knack for picking worthy or at least fundamentally interesting projects, but this brutally placed slog of a biblical drama sees him listlessly mumble his way through the iconic role while looking completely preoccupied.

In the very least, Phoenix got a relationship with co-star Rooney Mara out of it, who very nearly made this list herself with her lifeless performance in the title role. But of course, she'll never be able to out-awful her white-washed performance in Pan as Tiger Lily.

Thankfully Phoenix has already made this mess a distant memory with acclaimed performances in three well-received movies this year - You Were Never Really Here, Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot and The Sisters Brothers. He's also got Joker on the horizon, so this is best considered a minor blip at worst.
