12 Actors Who Got Drunk Or Stoned For Auditions
1. Ray Winstone - Star Wars
The idea of self-styled cinematic hardman and rough as a bag of nails Cockney Ray Winstone starring in something as strange and otherworldly as Star Wars is a bit perverse. Sort of like putting a big cube of concrete in an ornate Oriental Garden. Or a welder's mask on a ballerina.
He's great at what he does, obviously, but it's just a strange one. Still, that didn't stop him from auditioning for a role in The Phantom Menace as he revealed years later to Total Film. And nor did the heavy boozing session he'd been on the night before he turned up for his meeting with George Lucas:
"It didn't go well. Had words and that was that. But that's OK. I've worked for George since and he was fine. He didn't remember. Or if he did, he didn't take it to heart."I was up for the Princess' father, or something like that. I was pissed anyway. I'd been out all night and I turned up and he knew I was wrong for the part as soon as I walked in, but instead of saying that, he relayed the message to me through someone else and I took umbrage at that."
Still, at least he got to be in Indiana Jones 4 still, eh?
