12 Alternative Movies We're Sick Of Hearing Are Set At Christmas
11. Batman Returns
The presence of Christmas in Batman Returns doesn't really extend much further than showing Batman as dedicated enough to work over the holidays and an easy excuse to get everyone dressed up for the ubiquitous black tie event that seems to be a requirement for movies involving Batman. The wintry setting however is utilised perfectly, with lots of shots of Gotham in the snow that compliment the monochrome colour scheme perfectly. You could argue that the Penguin is part of the winter motif but Danny DeVito is so hugely enjoyable he really doesn't need justification. Batman Returns is arguably the most satisfying of the franchise, with its combination of two iconic and well loved villains, plenty of camp and Tim Burton's almost caricature direction that fits so well into a comic book movie. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman does take some rather large departures from the comic book version but I'm a firm believer that adaptations should bring something new to the table, rather than just produce a carbon copy. Despite the sleazy politicians and criminal underworld this film has a warmth that its predecessor Batman lacked (with the added benefit of not featuring the Bat credit card) which makes this almost but not quite a Christmas movie.
