12 Australian Films You Must See Before You Die

2. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

Mad Max 2
Warner Bros. Pictures

A phenomenal powerhouse of a film which is arguably the greatest sequel ever produced. While the original Mad Max and the insane follow up, Fury Road, could also have been worthy entries, they don't hold a candle to the incredible epic that is The Road Warrior.

Gibson is superb in the understated titular role, no longer looking for vengeance for the death of his family and now just looking to survive. Oil is in short supply and the battles for this precious commodity bring Max across a group of survivors who have created a seemingly impenetrable scanty town to keep the evil Marauders at bay. A deal is made between Max and the survivors, which sets in motion one of the greatest chase sequences put to film.

Full of insane costume design, spectacular action and a twist ending that you won't see coming, Mad Max The Road Warrior is the template for many a current action film. The premise was so strong that Kevin Costner basically ripped off the whole plot for his own film, Waterworld. But ignore that pathetic imitator and go watch this apocalyptic gem instead.
