12 Australian Films You Must See Before You Die
1. Crocodile Dundee
Ask an American what they think of when you mention Australia, and Crocodile Dundee is usually the first thing they'll mention. And why shouldn't they? The film is a cultural icon into itself, as is Australian comedian Paul Hogan who brilliantly brings the central character Mick Dundee to life with genuine charm and humour.
For those of you who have somehow missed this classic fish out of water rom-com, the tale starts with American journalist Sue Charlton visiting the Australian outback to undertake research for an upcoming article on crocodile poacher, Mick Dundee. There is plenty of fun to be had down under including a scene where a kangaroo returns fire against those hunting it!
But the action really picks up when Dundee heads to the States, with some of the funniest scenes in film history. From driving down the wrong side of the road to mistaking the effects of drug use for having a cold, Hogan brings charisma by the bucketload, making each scene work brilliantly. There is a real chemistry between Hogan and Linda Kozlowski as Charlton, so much so that the two got married in real life.
The film is best known for the attempted robbery scene featuring the iconic 'that's not a knife' line. While Dundee's retort and reveal of a significantly larger knife is funny in its own right, the true genius of the scene comes in his subsequent line- 'just young kids having fun.' This brilliantly displays Dundee's lovability as a character and the true heart of the film.
