12 Australian Films You Must See Before You Die

8. Moulin Rouge

Mad Max 2
Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

While financed largely by Hollywood, this film still makes the list as it was directed by an Aussie, Baz Luhrmann, and is filmed here as well. Nicole Kidman stars in the lead role alongside Ewan McGregor in a tale of lost love, but this is a film that is much more about the style and dance numbers than character development.

Baz’s delightfully over the top gem is full of clever retooling of old classics and exciting new numbers that play out in the typically flamboyant Luhrmann style. The cinematography evokes great emotion and contains so much vivid colour and energy that you could almost enjoy watching the film on mute.

The acting is all fine and deliciously over the top, bringing the 'So Amazing' number to life with humour and excitement. The love elements work well too thanks largely to McGregor's work as Christian, he's rendition of 'Your Song' sure to have eyes welling.

The film goes a little dark in the final act for its own good and loses some momentum because of this. The film overall works a treat, a thoroughly rousing two hours of out and out entertainment.
