12 Australian Films You Must See Before You Die

7. Babe

Mad Max 2
Universal Pictures

This great little flick exhibits everything you could hope for in an Aussie film, apart from any Australian accents. This family friendly affair is a genuine delight with a wonderful message that matches that of the tale it inspires to be, Charlotte's Web.

Just like E.B. White's timeless tale, Babe's protagonist is a pig who dares to go against life's grand plan. But where as Wilbur was a placid character who relied on the help of a kindly spider, Babe is a strong willed character who really has to do things by itself. Its quest to become the ultimate sheepdog is an endearing one, but Babe's determination to make this happen is something we can all aspire to.

James Cromwell is superb as the pig's owner who helps his friend aspire to its dreams, a gentle but powerful presence, while Magda Szubanski brings her usual comic eccentricities to the fore. The CGI is absolutely first rate, which in combination with a fantastic voice cast truly bring the characters to life.

It really is tough to find any negatives about Babe, a film truly for the whole family. Well, apart from the lack of Aussie accents.
