12 Awesome 2014 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
4. Gone Girl
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88% (8.0 average) Why It Deserves Best Picture: If there's any film on this list that could just about sneak into the Best Picture field, it's David Fincher's masterfully-constructed if inherently silly drama Gone Girl. With Rosamund Pike's revelatory lead performance, beautiful visuals and a hilariously satirical plot, the movie will absolutely have its passionate cheerleaders moving forward, and even if it's nowhere near Fincher's best efforts (more due to the premise than anything Fincher does), it's about as strong an adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel as one could expect. Why It Won't Get Nominated: For starters, it's an adaptation of a pulpy novel that asks the audience to simply hand-waive a number of contrivances and convoluted scenes, and while it will be difficult for voters to deny the strength of both Pike's performance and the screenplay, they likely won't find it important or tight enough to make their Best Picture ballot. Still, it's got the best chance of any film on here, so don't count it out 100% yet.
