12 Awesome 2014 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

3. Frank

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93% (7.5 average) Why It Deserves Best Picture: Lenny Abrahamson's delightfully bonkers, hilarious drama gives Michael Fassbender one of his strongest characters to date (and that's really saying something), allowing him to carve out an eccentric and ultimately deeply affecting performance as a reclusive, brilliant artist teetering on a razor's edge. Rather than an in-your-face quirk-fest like it could so easily have been, Frank is intentionally odd for sure, but it's also got plenty of heart, incredible music, and a slew of great performances alongside Fassbender, namely Domhnall Gleeson, Scoot McNairy and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It looks great, it sounds amazing and it offers an interesting look at the creative instinct: what a movie. Why It Won't Get Nominated: Simply, it's just too weird and niche for Oscar voters. It'll have a devoted quarter of supporters, but let's face it, Frank is just much better-suited to the Independent Spirit Awards, even if it's inevitably going to be steamrolled (as every other contender will be) by Richard Linklater's masterful Boyhood.
