12 Awesome 2014 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
10. Guardians Of The Galaxy
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91% (7.7 average) Why It Deserves Best Picture: It takes a special kind of talent to make a space opera including a talking tree and anthropomorphic raccoon among its characters one of the year's best-reviewed films. Against tremendous skepticism that he could make such a quirky adaptation of a niche comic book a huge success, director James Gunn delivered a thrilling, affecting spectacle with Guardians of the Galaxy, which many regard as one of the very best MCU films to date, second only perhaps to The Avengers. What's more, Guardians is set to become the second highest-grossing movie of the year once it makes another $5 million overseas, and hell, even an actor as traditionally-minded as Al freaking Pacino expressed his enthusiasm for it. Why It Won't Get Nominated: Al likely won't be joined in his praise by many of his contemporaries, though, because an effects-driven sci-fi film more focused on comedy than Serious Drama just isn't what they perceive to be "worthy", no matter how absurdly entertaining it is. Granted, their inevitable complaint that the plot is pretty scant and not particularly original is fair enough, but with so many wonderfully imaginative characters, does it really need to be anything more than it is?
