12 Awesome 2014 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
9. Pride
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94% (7.7 average) Why It Deserves Best Picture: At once covering the British campaigns for gay rights and the Miner's Strike of the 1980s, Pride is a film that, on the surface, ticks a lot of Oscar boxes. It's got a prestige-worthy concept, benefits from a deft script which balances seriousness with wit and silly comedy, and features a fantastic ensemble cast (even if none of them on their own might be considered truly Oscar-worthy). With a tone balanced perfectly between its political aspirations and entertaining camp, Pride is a heartfelt social drama that deserves more recognition than it's had to date. Why It Won't Get Nominated: Like Calvary, its presence in the Oscar race just isn't there. It opened on limited release in the US last month and has enjoyed strong reviews, but even with its crowd-pleasing style, it sadly hasn't picked up traction at all, which is a travesty. The only thing it has a remote chance of getting nominated for is its screenplay. Perhaps voters have already settled on The Imitation Game as their "gay issue" picture and don't fancy copping for another.
