Much like the earlier example of 13 Ghosts, the dense
and ambitious plotting of the Guillermo Del Toro produced Scary Stories to Tell
in the Dark means that the sort-of-but-not-quite anthology movie never has a
chance to truly showcase its inspired creations.
Bouncing between IT-style coming of age small town teen horror, an anthology movie, and a Goosebumps-esque “monsters escape a cursed book” conceit, the film never focuses on one foe long enough for them to become a real threat before moving onto the next—which is a crying shame, as each monster featured in this adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’ iconic, often-banned story collection is as terrifying as said book’s iconic illustrations.
