For those not old enough or English enough to be in the know, Dad’s Army was a much-loved British sitcom set during World War II that aired between the late 60s and late 70s and focused on a motley crew of volunteers that made up the Home Guard unit of a seaside town. It’s the kind of loveable, familiar show that makes for perfect Saturday afternoon TV fodder and though it’s certainly got its fair share of fans, it doesn’t exactly have the kind of appeal that would justify adapting it into a feature-length movie and expecting a whole new generation of young ‘uns to be enchanted by its premise.

But that’s what director Oliver Parker did this year with his big screen version of Dad’s Army and subsequently was rewarded with a whole load of negative reviews and an underwhelming 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Though the end result missed the mark there were some great performances in the movie from the likes of Bill Nighy and Michael Gambon, but the real standout was Toby Jones who gave an eerily accurate turn of the TV series’ pompous protagonist Captain Mainwaring.
