In a just world, Ethan Hawke would be considered a front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar right now, but Paul Schrader's searing drama about a minister (Hawke) having a crisis of faith is ultimately a little too rough-edged and unsentimental for the Academy.
The wildly inconsistent Schrader delivers one of the best efforts of his career as writer-director, crafting a patient yet richly rewarding character study which gives Hawke perhaps his most intriguingly tortured character to date.
Its artsy approach won't be to all tastes, but with gorgeous cinematography and an ending that leaves plenty to consider once the credits roll, First Reformed is one of the most entrancing and unforgettable films you'll see all year.
