12 Awful 2015 Horror Movies To Avoid This Halloween

9. Circle

This straight-to-VOD horror-thriller doesn't boast a star-studded cast nor a big budget, but it does tout an impressive idea: 50 people wake up in a room stood in a circle, each atop a red patch of floor. If they move from that patch, they die, and in addition, every two minutes one of them is being killed off by an unseen entity. As they discover that the group as a whole can "vote" on who the next person is to die, personal prejudices take over while they attempt to find a way to survive. It's a really neat idea, but sadly like many cool concepts, the execution just isn't there: as with any single-room premise, the script needs to be really strong, but Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione's screenplay sadly resorts to painting its characters in broad strokes, mostly racial, so that most of its social commentary feels incredibly lazy and heavy-handed. Conflict is contrived out of nowhere to keep the film running to feature length, the non-professional actors aren't great and the various twists and turns revealed later on aren't too surprising at all. You might still be tempted to give it a go because the plot is so intriguing, but you're setting yourself up for a huge let-down.
