12 Awful 2015 Horror Movies To Avoid This Halloween

8. The Lazarus Effect

This low-budget horror flick boasts a curious, Flatliners-inspired premise (medical students find a way to bring the dead back to life) and the cast is far better than this sort of material typically gets (Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Evan Peters, and Donald Glover), but The Lazarus Effect massively lacks in the scares department and, despite an agreeably snappy 83-minute run-time, just isn't at all memorable. It's certainly a step up from the most generic and redundant horror movies flooding multiplexes at the moment (you know which ones), but that's more due to the cast's efforts rather than the script, which takes far too long to get to its central premise given the short length, and takes an overly familiar approach to its central science vs. religion theme. Despite mostly negative reviews, the film made more than 10x its $3.3 million budget back, so don't be surprised if the ever-enterprising Blumhouse Productions decides to fast-track a sequel ASAP.
