12 Best Fan Theories For 2018's Biggest Movies
4. Most Of The Movie Is In Annie's Head - Hereditary
Ari Aster's instant horror classic is one of 2018's most provocative films of any genre, so it's little surprise there are a ton of theories out there about how it all went down.
The most compelling one offers up a unique riff on the played-out "it was all in her head" twist, by suggesting that the latter two-thirds of the movie are a perverse mental fabrication by bereaved mother and daughter Annie (Toni Collette).
Following the death of her daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro), Annie disappears into her work creating miniature houses, which combined with her deteriorating mental health, causes her to create a miniature piece based on Charlie's death.
This appears to be an outlet for her trauma, and given that much of the movie employs tilt-shift photography to evoke the look of a miniature, the theory posits that most of the post-Charlie scenes are in fact an elaborate concoction in Annie's own mind.
Plus, remember that weird, ambient light we see a few times throughout the movie? Could that be Annie's magnifying glass as she constructs a scene in the real world?
Rolling all this into Annie's family history of mental health issues (including her own), it's easy to see how someone could lose themselves like this. The movie's often dreamlike quality lends itself to interpretations such as this regardless of whether they make you bite or not.
