9. Moana – Moana

Arrival Amy Adams
Disney

A Disney princess whose end goal isn’t snagging the prince charming if her dreams?! It seems like Disney is finally getting to grips with the fact that promoting the idea that a girl’s ability to attract a dude is their most worthy quality to malleable young minds might be irresponsible because Moana, much like Brave’s Merida before her, is a Disney princess with a mission.

The daughter of a Polynesian island chief, Moana (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho in her acting debut) is tasked with the challenge of returning an ancient, mysterious relic to its goddess owner to save her island home and people from certain extinction. Though she comes up against opposition in the shape of her over-protective father and arrogant demigod Maui, she carries on regardless overcoming both her own and other’s doubts and successfully completes her quest. Not to mention, she’s Disney’s first ever Polynesian main character.

Progressive, spirited and determined, Moana is exactly the kind of princess Disney should be promoting to its young fans.
