12 Best Horror Movies Since The Year 2000

1. Martyrs (2008)

Wild Bunch

Martyrs will affect you if you have a fear. A fear of monsters, a fear of bugs, a fear of kidnapping, torture, or home invasion - this movie has you covered. It seems with so many disparate attacks on your psyche, the movie might become convoluted or weighed down by its own ambition. Thankfully, this is not the case.

Although the story structure in Martyrs is a far cry from traditional, that doesn'€™t mean it doesn'€™t contain a really good story. The characters have realistic motivations and none of them are one-dimensional. As a whole, the story is one part revenge tale, one part friendship drama, and one part open-ended question about what occurs after death. That last part involves a sequence that may actually strike some people as torture porn but it serves more of a purpose than just to disgust the audience.

It is the central driving force of the film (and perhaps much more): why are we here and what happens after we are gone? Asking that sort of big question amidst a grindhouse-esque level of gore and violence and having it all work successfully is no small feat, hence the top spot on this list.
