Written and directed by horror genre fanatics the Soska Sisters, American Mary is a body horror film about the extreme body modification community. Mary (Katharine Isabelle) is struggling to pay for medical school, so in order to find some money she starts taking illegal surgical jobs that are a bit out of the norm.
Because of its focus on body modification, all the effects in this movie are practical. Which is something that has all but gone out the window when it comes to horror now-a-days thanks to the prominence of visual effects. It's a breath of fresh air in a movie that's so graphic, especially because everything is so well done. To take it a step further and fully lean into the authenticity, many of the people in the film are actual members of the body modification community.
Katharine Isabelle kills it in this role. As she should, thanks to the Soska Sisters writing the film with only her in mind to play the part. Most may know her from the horror cult classic Ginger Snaps, but American Mary is where she truly shines. Isabelle really does make Mary out to be on of the most badass women in horror history.
American Mary is one of those genuine hidden gems that every horror fan should take the time to watch.
