When it comes to films that were ahead of their time, this 1999 Superhero parody is a perfect example. The concept of lesser-light heroes with minimal power required to step up and save the day is not just a funny one, but also resonates well in our current era of comic book infatuations.

The story sees Greg Kinnear's debonair Tony Stark like superhero Captain Amazing campaign for the release of his arch rival Casanova Frankenstein, due to a lack of a decent nemesis causing him to lose sponsors. The idea backfires however when he is captured and then accidentally killed, leaving a bunch of misfits with questionable skills required to stop Casanova's evil plans.

The film is deliberately campy in nature, with the utilisation of set pieces and costumes from Batman Forever making the film look visually the part. Hank Azaria brings the character of Jeff, aka 'The Blue Raja' to life, a hilarious parody of the ethnic stereotype too often seen in comic book characters of yesteryear. His ability to use cutlery with accuracy feels like a ripping Hawkeye parody before that character made it to the big screen.

The film proves to be a fun time throughout with a number of good ideas for multiple movies. The replication of some of these ideas in films like Megamind and Kick-Ass show just how ahead of its time the film really was- excluding the use of Smash Mouth on the soundtrack of course.
