12 Best Natural Disaster Movies Of All Time

11. Solar Flare #1- 2012

The Day After Tomorrow

It was hard to leave this big dumb nonsense off the list, all thanks to the eye candy of disaster placed before us. This Roland Emmerich product gets its CGI near perfect, but otherwise isn't quite sure what it is trying to be. There are jarring shifts in tone with scenes exploring the politics of the rich surviving while the poor are left to die, placed alongside goofy comedic moments featuring Woody Harrelson as a stoner conspiracy theorist.

There is still enough to enjoy here, with the Mayan prophecies of the end of the world coming to fruition in some spectacular action sequences. The science of solar flares is addressed adequately without overstaying its welcome, with the film at its best when it gives the audience the over the top nonsense we desire. Sequences involving massive floods crashing over the Himalayas and the utter destruction of various American locations are executed magnificently.

The corny script and characters don't add anything, nor does the moments of taking itself too seriously with unnecessary political issues mansplained away by Oliver Platt's US diplomat. It definitely outstays its welcome and the 'fist-pumping' finale is dreadfully out of place, but watching the world literally burn is still one hell of a sight.
