10. Solar Flare #2 - Knowing

The Day After Tomorrow
Summit Entertainment

The second of the films addressing a Solar flare wiping out humanity, but this one takes itself a lot more seriously. The sight of Nicholas Cage in a film is always a potential red flag, but he actually tones it down here and allows this semi spiritual piece to speak for itself.

The film is far from perfect, and one could drive an army tanker through some of the plot holes, but the concept of a man searching for meaning at the end of the world is actually well done. This concept plays out alongside a plot in which Cage's protagonist, Astrophysics Professor John Koestler, comes across coded messages predicting the end of the world.

The mystery elements play out in an engaging fashion as Koestler tries to predict forthcoming disasters, but it is upon his realisation the world is doomed that the film works best, addressing deeper issues like spirituality in a non condescending manner. The special effects aren't brilliant and a subplot involving aliens saving the last of mankind is unnecessary and stupid, but there's enough good stuff to keep the viewer engaged.
