12 Best Natural Disaster Movies Of All Time
9. Global Warming - The Day After Tomorrow
If this film was to wrap up 45 minutes earlier, it would come close to topping this list. The first two acts are close to perfection in terms of Natural Disaster flicks, getting us invested in the human characters while making the threat of global warming an ominous villain. The special effects are also first rate, in particular during the sequence where a tidal wave rages through the streets of New York.
Dennis Quaid plays Professor Jack Hall, who comes to the belief that a significant storm is set to occur that will wreak havoc on the world, but specifically in the USA. There is enough engaging and relatively accurate science blended in with government officials who would rather put their head in the sand than acknowledge what is before them, so as to make the film a good watch. The recent changes in weather and government leaders only makes these scenes more relatable today than during its 2004 release.
Feel free though to stop the film at the point Professor Hall goes on a quest to save his son who is stuck in a New York Library where the storm is at its worst. Subplots involving hungry wolves and people falling into frozen supermarkets drag out the viewing experience and the cliched ending doesn't work in any capacity.
