12 Best Old School Hollywood Feuds
4. Sophia Loren Vs. Jayne Mansfield
If dictionaries came with pictures, Sophia Loren’s face in the infamous photo above would be listed under ‘side-eye’. Taken in 1957 at a Hollywood dinner party thrown in honour of Loren’s introduction to the American film industry, the photo was snapped when rising star Jayne Mansfield sat next to Loren in a rather revealing gown.
It’s been speculated that Mansfield, who had a bit of a reputation for her ‘publicity stunts’ that usually involved her clothing ‘accidentally’ falling off, was deliberately trying to steal Loren’s limelight and, well, Sophia’s face says it all really.
Years later, Loren stated that her iconic side-eye was aimed more at Mansfield’s ample bosom rather than the actress herself as she feared she might suffer another of her infamous wardrobe malfunctions.
“I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow—BOOM!—and spill all over the table,” Loren said in a 2014 interview with Entertainment Weekly. Yeah okay, Sophia, we believe you.
Although, Loren has been asked to sign copies of the infamous photo on many occasions over the years and consistently refused to out of respect to Mansfield who died in 1967 so perhaps that sideways glance really was out of concern rather than contempt.
