3. The Man From Earth
The Man From Earth was the final completed work from legendary sci-fi writer Jerome Bixby (finished on his deathbed no less), better known for his work on the original Star Trek series that included episodes like "Mirror, Mirror" and "Requiem for Methuselah". This film shares a basic premise with the latter, but is wholly unique in its own right and worthy of viewing as its own thing.
The plot centers on one John Oldman, a departing university professor at a farewell banquet with his close friends and colleagues, who slowly reveals to them his true nature as an over 14,000 year old Cro-Magnon whose life may have inadvertently inspired the creation of major world religions.
The Man From Earth is a very self-contained film, focusing on one group of characters in one space and their interactions for its runtime. But the strong screenplay and chemistry between said characters is so compelling it's very easy to forget that, and you quickly get sucked into the story before you know it.
The performances from the ensemble cast - which features great character actors like Tony Todd, William Katt, and Star Trek: Enterprise veteran John Billingsley - is uniformly excellent and Richard Schenkman's laid back style of direction creates a great sense of warmth to the whole affair.
