9. Demon Seed
Demon Seed is a truly bonkers sci-fi horror romp from visual artist-turned-filmmaker Donald Cammell, best known for his 1970 gangster-psychedelia mashup Performance, starring Mick Jagger and co-directed with Nicolas Roeg.
It follows a not-quite-mad scientist (Fritz Weaver) who designs an AI (voiced by Robert Vaughn) to run his swanky 70s smart home, only for it to gain sentience and turn on its creator, locking down the house and tormenting his wife (Julie Christie) with the intent to impregnate her via artificial insemination in the hopes of spawning a corporeal form.
Demon Seed might be better known for being parodied brilliantly by The Simpsons in Treehouse of Horror XII, with the lovelorn AI voiced by Pierce Brosnan, but the original is actually a quite effective slice of pulpy sci-fi cheese.
Adapted from a Dean Koontz novel, Demon Seed might not be the deepest or most self-serious sci-fi horror can get, but it's campy nature paired with Cammell's strong eye for interesting visuals and Christie's surprisingly-involved performance make this a worthy afternoon watch.
