10. Redline

Returning to the world of Japanese animation, Redline is a completely-bonkers sci-fi racing film that was the brainchild and passion project of anime virtuoso Takeshi Koike (of Afro Samurai and Lupin the IIIrd fame). For what would be his directorial debut, Koike worked tirelessly for SEVEN YEARS STRAIGHT, creating some 100,000 hand-made drawings to comprise the film's 102 minute runtime. That alone makes the film worth a curiosity watch, but all that is before even touching on the mind-melting visuals and action.

Never before or since has an animated film so perfectly captured a sense of speed and propulsion than this. Watching the story, about the most dangerous and exciting car race in the universe, is like shot through the air at Mach 10 and then some. It's like Speed Racer on MDMA, adrenaline filled, unlimited craziness that'll make your blood vessels pop and your walls shake.

But Koike doesn't forget to create a fully flesh-out world of unique and striking characters. It's pure energtic eye-candy of the best kind, and it'll leave you feeling invigorated, like you could leap out of the window and run a marathon right then and there.
