It wasn’t too long ago that YA movies were all the rage, with series like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games consistently drawing huge audiences and grossing hundreds of millions in box office takings. But judging by the dwindling popularity of the Divergent Series and the critical flop that was last year’s The 5th Wave, the YA genre might be finally running out of fuel.

The Space Between Us – a sci-fi romance mashup about the first boy born on Mars and the relationship he develops with an Earthling girl while trying to discover the identity of his father – seems to have caught the tail end of YA’s wave of success.

By its third week in circulation, the movie was pulled from all but 317 of its 2,758 cinemas which according to Box Office Mojo ranks it as the seventh biggest theatre drop in a movie’s third weekend in recent cinema history.
