12 Biggest Box Office Flops Of 2017 (So Far)

10. Rock Dog

Ghost In The Shell
Summit Entertainment

After 2016 was such a big year for animated movies, with both Zootopia and Finding Dory surpassing the billion-dollar mark and Universal’s the Secret Life of Pets and Sing raking in impressive profits too, Summit Entertainment and Huayi Brothers were probably hoping to coast on last year’s animation successes.

Unfortunately, the Chinese-American adaptation failed to make much of an impact in either China or the US (or anywhere else for that matter) raking in just shy of $21 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $60 million. Ouch.

Some say that Rock Dog’s failure in China could be a product of Huayi Brothers’ rival production and theatre chain company Wanda Group opting to show the film on a limited number of screens after Huayi poached one of its executives but to be brutally honest it could simply be down to its lacklustre animation and formulaic kid’s movie plotline than any big conspiracy.
