12 Biggest Lies In Harry Potter We All Accept
11. Voldemort Is A Compelling, Charismatic Leader
Throughout the series we’re reminded, in a transparent
political allegory which too many fans of the franchise are still applying to
real world leaders, that the evil He Who Must Not Be Named amassed power through
persuasion, as he spread his dangerous doctrine of wizard superiority throughout
the nation and garnered support from wizards bigoted against Muggles and
mudbloods. The overarching storyline is intended to call to mind real life
fascist populists who wore the veneer of a respectable public face to hide the inhuman
beliefs their followers fostered, and as such Voldemort is made out to be a
persuasive and commanding speaker who can move a crowd to agree with some unutterably
awful ideas.
Except we never see any of that charm or acceptable public rhetoric from the blatantly evil monster, and everything from his flat reptilian face to his hissing, viciously cruel dialogue makes it cartoonishly obvious that the man is unmistakeably a villain?
For Voldemort to grow such following he’d need a pretty large mainstream presence, and something about calling your followers Death Eaters doesn’t feel like it would win over many Britons, wizarding or otherwise…
