2. Julian Explores His Mother's Womb - Only God Forgives
Nicolas Winding Refn's Ryan Gosling-starring drama was one of the year's strangest and most divisive films, delivering a very different experience from what most of us expected, if still strained through the director's insistent, deliberate style. The whole film is pretty much one giant WTF, but the most bizarre scene occurs after Julian's (Gosling) mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) is killed by the antagonist, Chang, having her stomach sliced open. When Julian finds the corpse, he decides it'd be fun to place his hands inside his mother's gaping wound, a not-so-subtle allusion to his desire to return to the womb, I suppose. It's Pop Psychology 101 and pretty much just odd for its own sake: WTF indeed.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
