4. Ryan Gosling Dies In The First Act - The Place Beyond The Pines
Props to the marketing team behind Derek Cianfrance's searing drama for refusing to give away the plot twist that occurs at the end of the epic film's first act. The promotional materials suggested that Ryan Gosling's Luke Glanton was the main character, and for the film's first 40-or-so minutes, this seems to be the case...until Luke is shot from a window by Bradley Cooper's cop Avery Cross, falling to the concrete below and quickly expiring. The shot of Gosling bleeding out on the pavement (pictured above) really sets the tone for the unpredictable ride that is to follow, and was one of cinema's great surprises last year. Just make sure you don't tell your friends, especially if they're big Gosling fans.
