12 Blatant Copycat Movie Pairs (And Which Was Better)
4. This Is The End & The World’s End
Apocalyptic buddy comedies This Is the End and The World’s End (the finale of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s Cornetto trilogy) were released only a month apart but apart from their titles and Armageddon-fuelled plots, their similarities were really only skin-deep.
Starring Seth Rogen, James Franco and friends as send-ups of themselves, This Is the End is an LA-set stoner gross-out comedy and features a rapture-style apocalypse while The World’s End is home to the kind of wry, witty humour we’ve come to associate with the Cornetto trilogy and features an alien invasion induced apocalypse.
And unlike some of the offenders on this list, they sorted out any potential problems maturely like grown-ups. When This Is the End’s working title was still ‘The End of the World’, Simon Pegg spoke to Seth Rogen to politely request they alter it slightly so it didn’t clash too much with The World’s End to which Rogen obliged. Which is kind of sweet.
Which One Was Better?
This Is the End might have been the bigger box office draw but The World’s End boasts the winning team of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and it’s the perfect closer to the Cornetto trilogy, so it wins out.
