12 Blockbuster Films That Flopped In America (But Were Loved Overseas)

6. The Tourist (2010) - $278.3 Million Worldwide

Budget: $100m Domestic Box Office: $67.6m International Box Office: $210.7m Gloriously named Academy Award-winning director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck made his Hollywood debut with this romantic caper starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, a movie that proved having two of the biggest movie stars in the world onscreen together doesn't always guarantee chemistry, or even entertainment for that matter. Still, the international appeal of the two A-listers saw The Tourist make up for its domestic disappointment with a strong box office showing overseas. The movie could only open in second place at the domestic box office with a poor $16.5m, with audiences quickly realizing that the big names and beautiful scenery hardly compensated for such a nonsensical plot that couldn't quite decide if it was a comedy or a thriller, and ultimately failed at both. The Tourist earned over 75% of its total box office outside of the United States, with the popularity of the two stars ensuring healthy returns from Europe, South America and especially Asia, with China and Japan the most lucrative international territories. While the bona-fide movie star is arguably a dying breed, the success of The Tourist proved that big names can still sway overseas audiences to part with their hard-earned cash even if the reviews are less than stellar.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
